Game Summary

Soul is a psychological horror platformer. This game is about a character who is constantly having nightmares due to bullies throughout his life and pressures from his peers. In his dream he is always trying to escape from something that is chasing him every night. During his dream he will continuously transform into other animals as long as it can help him run from whatever it is that is chasing him.

Simple Control

Although the player will be able to control different animals, the controls are kept simple. The player only needs to control the direction of where the player is moving and an action key. The action key is the most important key for the game, it’s the key where the player uses to jump over obstacles, flap the bird’s wing to gain height and flap the fish’s tail to swim.

This control is kept simple because the player will be controlling different creatures therefore having the controls kept simple and as similar as possible across the game will make it easier for the player to understand the control. Which will help the player to focus on dodging the obstacles on the way instead of thinking about what buttons do they need to be pressing every time they play as a new creature.

Transforming

Initial design idea for transforming into other animals is to allow the player to transform into different animals at all times. After playtesting with that initial idea it’s shown that allowing the player to convert into different animals whenever they want, will create confusion for the player. Therefore as the game progresses to different parts of the level, the player will see white animal spirits that the player can walk up to and press tab to transform in to that animal.
